Akbar Oluwakemi-Idowu Gbajabiamila was born on 6 May 1979 in Los Angeles, California. He holds the American nationality and possesses Nigerian ethnicity. His birth sign is Taurus. He was born to his father, Mustapha Gbaja-Biamila, who was a former owner of the plumbing business, and mother, Bolatio Gbaja-Biamila, a former owner of a Hair Salon. However, in 2002, he lost his mother in a car accident. He was raised with six other siblings, two of them are his brother, Kabeer, NFL Player, and Abdul. 

Talking about this education, he went to Crenshaw High School and later studied at Wharton School of Business. In 1997, he attended San Diego State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication.

Akbar had an interest in basketball at an early age. While in high school, he even competed at the Nike Extravaganza tournament.  Later, he was shifted to football and played in NLF for five years with different clubs such as Oakland Raiders, San Deigo Chargers, and Miami Dolphins. Apart from his sports interest, he was more into broadcasting. In 2005, he attended NFL Broadcast Boot Camp. Later he was able to serve in NBC radio affiliate KSWB in San Diego. In 2012, he worked as an analyst for CBS and Mtn. Network and later in 2015, he signed for the American Ninja Warrior.

Married to Wife, Chrystal

Akbar is married to Chrystal, and together they share four children, two sons, Nasir Gbaja-Biamila and Elijah Gbaja-Biamila and two daughters, Saheedat Gbaja-Biamila and Naomi Gbaja-Biamila. Akbar was struggling to find his identity and religious beliefs while he was dating Chrystal. His wife confessed to him to have a relationship with Jesus, and Akbar started to read the Bible and realized the true connection with God and converted from Muslim to Christianity.
