Halsey had a harsh childhood as she used to get bullied a lot at her school, which even led her to attempt suicide at the age of 17 and was nearly hospitalized for about three weeks. She graduated from Warren Hills Regional High School in New Jersey. She then enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design. Due to financial issues, she went to the community college. She later dropped from college and was kicked out by her parents.

After being homeless, Halsey occasionally stayed with her maternal grandmother and started her musical journey. She used to spend hours writing her own music. At the age of 17, she began posting videos on social media platforms like Kik and YouTube under the username se7enteenblack.

Initially, Halsey caught the attention of her viewers by uploading a parody of Tylor Swift's song "I Knew You Were Trouble." In 2014, she recorded her own song, "Ghost", and posted it on SoundCloud. Finally, on 27 October 2014, Halsey released her debut album "Badlands."
