Leon Christoph Goretzka was born on 6 February 1995 in Bochum, Germany. He is German by nationality and belongs to the Dutch ethnicity. His birth sign is Aquarius. His father, Konrad Goretzka, is an automotive engineer and electrical engineer for Opel.

Leon grew up with six siblings. He graduated from the Alice-Salomon-Berufskolleg in Bochum.
