    Wayne started coaching in Ipswich in 1976. Later, he moved to Brothers and Souths of Brisbane Rugby League Premiership. He went on to coach several teams like Brisbane Broncos, ST. George Illawarra Dragon, Canberra Raiders, and Newcastle Knights. In 2015, he re-joined the Brisbane Bronco.

    In 2016, Wayne became the head coach for the England team. In 2018, he was officially sacked as a coach of the Brisbane Broncos. Later, he became the head coach for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2019. He also guided Queensland to a miracle series win in the 2020 State of Origin series in a year.
