Gillon McLachlan

Gillon McLachlan is the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Football League. He is also the Patron of the Children’s Cancer Foundation. He has played more than 200 games in the ruck, mainly for University Blues in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.

Gillon McLachlan was born in the year 1973 in Adelaide, South Australia. He is an Australian by nationality and belongs to the Caucasian ethnicity. His parents are Angus, a former first-class cricketer, and Sylvia. He grew up with his three younger brothers – Hamish, Will, and Banjo.

Gillon graduated from the University of Adelaide with a degree in Bachelor of Commerce. In 1996, he completed a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Melbourne. He then completed the Senior Executive Program at Stanford University.

Gillon is happily married to his wife, Laura Blythe. His wife is the daughter of former Spotless Chairman Brian Blythe. The husband and wife duo share four children – Edie, Cleo, Sidney, and Luna.

Gillon met his wife while pursuing his bachelor’s degree at Trinity College as Laura was a fellow resident at Trinity College. After dating for years, the couple tied the knot in 2003. They have been together ever since.

Gillon played Australian football in the Hills Football League colts competition for the now-defunct Pleasant Valley club. Later, he played with Melbourne University Blues in the Victorian Amateur Football Association. He even became the captain of the team for two years, from 2000 to 2002. 

After graduating from university, Gillon started working as a management consultant with Accenture. In 2000, he was employed as a strategy consultant to the AFL by CEO Wayne Jackson. He then became General Manager of Commercial Operations in 2003 and was appointed Chief Operating Officer in 2008. He has been serving as Chief Executive Officer of the AFL since 30 April 2014.

As the former CEO of the AFL, Gillon receives an average salary of nearly $2 million. In 2016, he was paid an annual salary of $1.74 million. As of 2022, he has accrued a whopping net worth of $10 million.
