The 30-year-old was born on June 15, 1992, in Conroe, Texas near Houston. He is the son of Anderson McCollum and Ivy McCollum. He has two brothers – Tyler Stephen McCollum and Michael McCollum Adams – and a sister.

He grew up listening to classic country performers like Willie Nelson, Buck Owens, and Porter Wagoner, and his family introduced him to red dirt musicians like Cross Canadian Ragweed, Pat Green, and Chris Knight. While living in Austin, McCollum continued to perform as a singer-songwriter and went on his first tour with the Texas band Six Market Blvd. The tour influenced the lyrics of his first single, “Highway,” which was released on June 5, 2013, and was eventually featured on his debut EP A Red Town View. Corby Schaub, Ryan Bingham’s former guitarist, produced the EP, which was released on November 19, 2013.

McCollum’s debut album, The Limestone Kid, was produced at Cedar Creek Recording in Austin and features Americana, Texas country, and folk-rock influences.

On July 7, 2017, McCollum released an EP titled Probably Wrong: Session One. It was his first Billboard chart appearance, debuting at No. 6 on Heatseekers Albums, No. 14 on the Independent Albums Chart, and No. 15 on the Country Album Sales chart, with 2,000 copies sold in the first week in the United States.

On June 27, 2019, McCollum signed with Universal Music Group. “Pretty Heart” was his first single with the label. McCollum’s Hollywood Gold EP was released on October 16, 2020.
